Notes
This story features the exploration of gold mining and the industrialisation of copper. One of the outlaws, the main character of the story, seeks employment in a copper mine in Wallaroo Bay to blend in and await their chance to escape Australia. He works as 'a surface hand' wheeling copper ore to the surface. The text also captures the global networks potentially connected through mining: The narrator moved from Ireland to Australia when a child. The outlaws board a Japanese vessel (shipping copper ores to Japan) to flee Australia, disguising themselves as Americans while in Japan. After getting tired of Japan, the outlaws travel to China where they hire a Chinese labourer (through a Chinese merchant) to travel to Australia on their behalf in order to arrange their family reunion in North America.
